-And How to Approach it Differently…

There’s a quiet truth that doesn’t get talked about enough.  Starting an online business can feel overwhelming…But so can running one.  And often, the overwhelm doesn’t go away — it just changes shape.

At the beginning, it looks like this:

  • Too many ideas
  • Too much advice
  • Not knowing where to start
  • Feeling like everyone else is ahead

So you pause. You overthink. You delay.

But for many people, it doesn’t stop there. You do start. And then the overwhelm shifts.

It becomes:

  • Trying to do everything yourself
  • Constantly feeling “behind”
  • Saying yes to too much
  • Working longer and longer hours

What started as excitement becomes pressure.

And this is where it gets real.  There’s a temptation — especially early on — to give it everything.  To make it work.To prove it can succeed.  To move faster.  So instead of working 8–10 hours…

You find yourself working:

  • 12 hours
  • 14 hours
  • sometimes 15–16 hour days

Not occasionally. But repeatedly.

And here’s the part we don’t question enough:

We would never accept that long-term if we were working for someone else.  But in our own business…we normalise it.

The problem isn’t hard work.  Hard work has its place.  But when everything feels urgent, unclear, or unstructured…

That’s when overwhelm builds.  And over time, that can lead to burnout.

I was reminded of this recently. In a conversation, someone shared that they had run an online business for years…but stepped away.  Not because they weren’t capable.  Not because it didn’t work.  But because it became too much.

This is where many people get it wrong

We’re often told:

“Start a side hustle”

“Build multiple income streams”

“Scale your business”

But we’re rarely shown how to:

-Start in a way that feels manageable

-Build with clarity instead of chaos

-Avoid creating something that becomes overwhelming

So what’s the alternative?

Not doing less.  But starting more simply.

A more grounded way to approach it:

1. Choose one path — not five. Clarity removes a huge amount of mental pressure.

2. Focus on progress, not perfection. You don’t need everything figured out to begin.

3. Reduce the noise. Too much information creates confusion, not clarity.

4. Build something that fits your life.  Not something that demands all of it.

Because here’s the truth-

Starting isn’t the hardest part.  Starting in a way that feels clear and manageable…that’s what makes the difference.
